Stuck in Lockdown?

Julia Simens normal

Take a sheet of paper and see how many emotions you can list.  For many this is a quick and easy task but after coming up with a long list of thirty to forty words they find it gets so much harder.

Now compare your list with someone else’s in your family. You will likely find that there is inconsistency among everyone in decoding which words are emotion words and which are not. Generally people use different words to convey emotions but also they may interpret differently the emotional degree of these words. This is why many research groups collect and classify huge number of words, which might be emotional words.

Storm and Storm asked several hundred children and adults to list every emotion word they could think of. They were also asked to label the feelings of characters in clips from commercial televisions shows.  Together, the children and the researchers were able to come up with a list of over 200 terms, which is pretty impressive, and certainly more than even an adult would normally come up with alone.

Children, understandably, have a hard time doing this alone too. They need a loving caring adult to support their emotional growth and to direct them towards the emotional skills they need to be successful. Work with your child and see if you can come up with more than 100 emotional words. Really work hard and perhaps you all can get up to 200! That’s something to be proud of!

Here’s just a list of ABCD emotions and we got clear up to 191 emotions within the first 4 letters of the alphabet.
